Con Edison innovates to protect public safety and reduce manhole explosions in New York City by deploying CNIguard’s Sentir remote sensoring system using the alias SOS (Structure Observation System).
Serving over 3.5 million customers, utility company Con Edison is responsible for keeping the lights on via 96,000 miles of underground cables interconnected through 267,000 manholes in New York City.
As harsh environments take their toll on underground cables and connections causing damage to cable insulation, the resulting manhole events, fires and explosions can bring NYC to a standstill, with the risk being greatest in the Winter when streets are salted to melt accumulated snow and ice.
Con Edison’s continuous improvement and public safety program includes visual inspections, quality assurance, stray and contact voltage testing, and venting of underground structures. In addition, an initial 3600 of CNIguard’s Sentir (SOS) monitors have been deployed to serve an early warning of potential issues resulting from temperature, humidity or combustible gas levels.
