Critical Infrastructure

Critical Infrastructure

According to the U.S Department of Homeland Security, Critical Infrastructure provides “the essential services that underpin American society and serve as the backbone of our nation’s economy, security and health.” And keeping it safe is a shared responsibility – Federal, State, local, tribal and territorial governments, as well as private companies, and individuals.

But it’s not just in the USA. In the UK, the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI) has categorized the nation’s infrastructure into nine sectors: communications, emergency services, energy, financial services, food, government, health, transport and water. Within those sectors are “critical” infrastructure elements.

While national authorities are responsible for the protection of their own Critical Infrastructure, disruptions (such as power and communications) can be felt across national borders. The European Commission lists reducing the vulnerabilities of critical infrastructure and increasing resilience as one of its major objectives as damage, destruction or disruption to critical infrastructure through natural disaster, terrorism, criminal activity or malicious behaviour could have a “significant negative impact” on the security of the EU and its citizens
